How to Seal a Travertine Pool Deck (and How Often to Reseal)

Travertine is one of the most popular pool deck materials in Texas, and for good reason. It stays cooler underfoot than concrete, it has a natural look that fits almost any backyard, and it holds up well to sun and heat.

But travertine has one weakness: it's porous. The small holes and channels that give it character also soak up pool water, sunscreen, leaves, dirt and anything else that lands on it. Left unprotected, that leads to stains, dark spots, mold and algae in shaded corners, and stone that slowly loses its color.

Sealing fixes that. Here's how to do it right.

Why travertine needs a penetrating sealer

There are two basic kinds of sealers.

  • Topical sealers sit on top of the stone and form a film. They often add a shine, can make wet stone slippery, and eventually flake, peel or yellow in the Texas sun. Then you're stripping and resealing.

  • Penetrating sealers soak into the stone and protect it from the inside. Nothing sits on the surface, so the stone keeps its natural look and texture, stays breathable and won't peel.

For a pool deck, penetrating is the right choice. You want water to bead up and roll off, not soak in, and you don't want a slick film where people walk barefoot.

Eco-Seal Heavy-Exposure is a penetrating sealer made for porous surfaces like travertine, limestone, concrete and pavers. It absorbs into the stone, blocks water, oil, dirt and stains, and strongly reduces mold and algae growth, all without changing how the stone looks.

Step 1: Clean the deck thoroughly

Sealer locks in whatever is on the surface, so start clean.

  • Sweep off leaves and debris.

  • Wash the deck with a cleaner made for natural stone, and scrub any stained or green areas with a stiff brush.

  • Avoid acidic cleaners like vinegar or muriatic acid. Travertine is a calcium-based stone, and acid can etch and dull it.

  • Rinse well so no cleaning agents are left behind.

Step 2: Let it dry completely

The stone needs to be dry all the way through so the sealer can soak in. We recommend at least 24 hours of drying time, longer after heavy rain or in shaded areas.

Step 3: Apply the sealer

Spray or brush Heavy-Exposure onto the surface. For porous stone like travertine, apply wet-on-wet: put on the second coat while the first is still wet. That lets the stone take in as much protection as it can absorb. After 24 hours, a second coat can be applied to intensify the effects.

One gallon covers roughly 400 to 600 square feet, depending on how absorbent the stone is. Travertine with open pores will usually land toward the lower end.

Step 4: Let it cure

Under normal conditions, the surface is dry to the touch within 3 hours. Ideally, keep people, pets and pool furniture off the deck for 24 hours so the sealer can fully cure.

How to tell it worked

Sprinkle some water on the deck. On sealed travertine, it beads up and sits on top instead of darkening the stone. That's your protection at work.

How often should you reseal a travertine pool deck?

With Heavy-Exposure, expect 3 to 6+ years of protection. A pool deck is a high-traffic horizontal surface that gets constant water, sun and foot traffic, so plan on the shorter end of that range. Vertical stone like walls and facades can last up to twice as long.

A simple check: when water stops beading and starts soaking into the stone again, it's time to clean and reseal.
